Vad är en kalori?

Ordet kalori betyder värme. Det kan härledas till t.ex. spanskans calor som betyder varmt. När man i dagligt tal pratar om ”kalorier” menar man egentligen kilokalorier (Kcal).

EN kalori (cal) är den mängd energi som krävs för att höja värmen hos 1 gram vatten med en grad celsius. Således är en Kcal den energi som krävs för att värma upp en liter vatten med 1 grad Celsius.

Då det krävs lite olika mängd energi för att värma upp vatten med olika ursprungtemperatur så har man kommit fram till att en cal är den mängd energi som behövs för att värma upp 1 gram vatten från 14,5 till 15,5 grader Celsius.

Kcal kommer främst från proteiner, kolhydrater och fett. Då Kcal kan komma från olika ämnen så har det olika effekt på kroppen trots att de ger energi. Till exempel är proteiner och fetter essentiella för kroppen (vi dör om vi inte får i oss dem på tillräckligt lång tid), medan kolhydrater är icke-essentiella (vi kan leva utan dem hela livet). Utöver det har olika sorters proteiner, kolhydrater och fett olika effekter i kroppen. Det absolut viktigaste för att en diet ska lyckas är dock att man har ett kaloriunderskott och inte varifrån kaloriintaget kommer ifrån. Det är därför alla dieter där man äter tillräckligt lite fungerar för att just gå ner i vikt.

1 gram protein = 4 Kcal

1 gram kolhydrat = 4 Kcal

1 gram fett = 9 Kcal

1 gram alkohol = 7 Kcal (Tänk på det när ni dricker nästa gång, noll näring men mycket energi).

En påse chips innehåller ca 1000 Kcal, dvs. 1 000 000 kalorier, vilket är tillräckligt med energi för att 10 liter nollgradigt vatten ska börja koka!
